With an impressive 38-year career in law enforcement, Sheriff Mark Gerrells brings a wealth of experience to his role as the leader of the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office. His service with the Sky Valley Police Department, Mountain City Police, Clayton Police, and the Rabun County Marshals Office has provided him with a deep understanding of Rabun County’s needs. His previous role as Chief of Police for Clayton Police further refined his leadership abilities.
A graduate of the Georgia Police Chief Executive training and the Georgia Sheriffs Academy, Sheriff Gerrells is highly trained and well-equipped to lead with integrity. As a certified general, defensive tactics, firearms, sniper, and SWAT instructor, he has trained officers from federal, state, local, and international agencies. Additionally, he holds black belts in four martial arts systems and is a certified personal trainer, underscoring his commitment to discipline and preparedness.
Sheriff Gerrells is steadfast in his mission to restore professionalism, ethical leadership, and operational excellence to the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office. His objectives include fostering community trust, enhancing agency morale, and implementing modern training to prepare officers for today’s challenges. While tough on serious crime, he is equally dedicated to promoting transparency and ensuring the department operates with the highest ethical standards.
As a longtime adjunct instructor at the Northeast Georgia Police Academy, Sheriff Gerrells has trained countless new cadets, passing on his passion for law enforcement and service. His strong Christian faith and unwavering commitment to serving Rabun County with honor and integrity are mirrored in his personal life. Sheriff Gerrells cherishes his role as a family man and is the proud father of three sons: one serving as a Captain in the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office, another as the Rabun County Marshal, and the third as a member of the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. He is also a devoted grandfather to four grandchildren and father-in-law to two daughters-in-law, embodying his dedication to building a stronger, safer community for future generations.
